[Feb. 11th, 2008|01:58 pm] |
To celebrate my impending thirtiesdoom I started a new blog last week.
It's called '30 Years Come Back' and offers 1-2 songs each weekday, starting from 1978 and moving forward a year day by day, returning to '78 and repeating the cycle when the present has been caught up with. Sometimes a song may be one year ahead or behind it's original year of release, just to annoy you. But I hope you like it and some if not all of the track selections.

It's going well so far to the extent that I'm considering additional blogs - one for pre-78 songs I like and one for current stuff only, but these would both need far more work and time so it's more likely I'll tie this into a base58 re-jig that could include a mini blog perhaps. Keep 'em peeled. |

| Ultramix 94 |
[May. 30th, 2007|11:29 am] |
FINALLY finished this. You can listen to all 17(!) parts online here
Or download them at high-quality here
Really must make torrents for all of these sometime. I was thinking "ah no-one really cares about this so why bother" but then two friends told me on Saturday that they still listen to the 05 mix and a third person expressed interest. People tend to appreciate the more recent ones rather than revisit the 90s tho it seems.
In case you missed out I put another video sequence together this time to go with an audio sequence from the 2004 mix featuring Girls Aloud, Chromeo and Dizzee Rascal. Good fun tho it's only really worthwhile for when 'Stand Up Tall' comes in.
In the pipeline: more of all this plus Promozone 0706 (new pop videos for June) in a couple of weeks. |

| My first video mash-up... |
[Apr. 22nd, 2007|09:28 pm] |
I finally started using Adobe Premiere to mess around with video editing again which I haven't done for many years now. Luckily it wasn't too difficult re-acquainting myself with it. The motive was to create a video sequence to go with a section of one of the parts of the recent Ultramix '94, namely the Biosphere/Madonna/Autechre sequence at the end of Part 9. So here it is dubbed over the original promo clip for Madonna's Bedtime Story' (a fantastic video by Mark Romanek - probably the most sophisticated references and imagery you'll ever see in a Madge vid) taken from The Ultimate Collection DVD:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI95zyuBqcE
Great fun to put together because of the 'control' element, lots of faffing around cutting up the original vid and speeding it up/slowing it down to fit the vocals. Hope to do a few more of these to go with Ultramix sections already made and those to come. |

| Meme questions... |
[Mar. 12th, 2007|11:35 am] |
...from freakytrigger
1. Are you proud of your role in the birth of the bootleg boom?
Yes but if only I had done as much DJing as I had done interviews for American press. It's for the best tho as I think back to the sort of thing I was doing then and wince a bit (as I will when I look back on now in five years probably!). It was 'too much too soon' in many respect tho - being invited to music conferences in other countries and not being able to go or just being too scared to go was rubbish. The best things were being involved (read 'muscling in on') in a blog that became a focal point for things in a very short space of time, getting namechecked on Radio 1 and XFM and eventually appearing on the latter and getting a mix I made played out - that might be the only time ever 'Euphoria (Nino's Dream)' got played on a mainstream radio station so good for that if nothing else. Meeting a lot of interesting new people was also great. But there were so many missed opportunities at the same time...
2. Whose CD sleeve would you most like to design?
If Rachel Stevens gets to do another album then her. Anyone like that really. It might not be very challenging tho (apart from the challenge of trying to help make a boring pop star LOOK interesting as well as sound interesting), and would probably revolve more around the photographer's ideas. But I wouldn't be too fussy here because further opportunities to do such a thing may not come easy yet when they do they pay quite nicely.
3. What is the worst design faux pas a client can make?
Not knowing what they want but knowing what they don't want perhaps, reasonable as it may seem to them. Having some idea of the designer's own processes really helps. And if they take forever to pay you that's always disappointing of course. I've not had any real nightmares in these respects though.
4. What is your happiest childhood memory?
Going on a day trip to London with my Mum one time maybe. It's hard to think of anything specific. Some seaside trips would also figure highly as I do love the beach (and trips/journeys in general, clearly) despite never dressing for it.
5. If you were a mythological creature, which would you like to be?
A griffin perhaps. None of this centaur rubbish. |

[Jan. 9th, 2007|06:35 am] |
I'm getting rid of a lot of my 12" collection and some people expressed an interest in possibly obtaining a few of the records up for grabs. So here is a list. Some classics in here but also admittedly some tat. Condition of most of these is 3/5 at best but all playable. If you see something you want place your reservation in the comments box. Cheers.

| 4 Day Weekend - Half Time Report |
[Sep. 10th, 2006|01:10 am] |
A solid, promising performance so far. Dynamic workhorse efforts in the opening 20 despite the sun beating down outside in delightful but decidedly wicked fashion. A brief break in the late Summer warmth in order to venture to the local PO collection office to pick up some potential source material for Operation Make-Popjustice-CD-Look-Good and purchase a pizza from the local Polish cafe proved effective although a howler of a chance came as the camera was left at home - thus failing to capture the strange new electronic signboard the Council have placed by the Lea Bridge roundabout roadworks as construction continues on the new #38 bus terminal. The signboard flashes up messages such as 'DON'T HAVE BEEF, HAVE CHICKEN' and 'DON'T LEAVE NEIGHBOURS ALONE'. An ambitious and imaginative attempt to harmonise the Murder Mile, well done all involved.
Anyway I managed to get the CD cover done on time which amazed me if no-one else as this was real make-or-break stuff. V re-assuring to know I can actually do a good job on time when it comes to something this big, and they seem to be a lot happier with it than I am which is another good sign. Have to actually produce the entire package before it goes to print in just over a week though so there's still everything to play for, Maniche.
So Friday I was isolated and focussed (for once) but today went down to Camden with fathands and cis for tea at Segafredo and some shopping. Bought a King Tubby triple CD retrospective and Chromeo's first album in Fopp. Wandered around the markets by the Lock for a bit. Never had a period where I really disliked Camden despite the tourist/weirdo throng and the place always brings back good memories. London in the sunshine, everything making sense. Got the bus down to Holborn, walking into Covent Garden. Picked up a nice white shirt plus tie for the wedding later today. Finally bought an issue of Plan B plus The Knife's first album in Rough Trade. Wandered some more through Soho before settling on dinner at Kowloon restaurant in Chinatown. Beijing dumplings, deep fried squid. Tasty. Took a crappy photo of the Hare Krishas as they shuffled past chanting that same old song. Bussed it home in time to listen to some of Alix's old 7" records on the new player and watch Everton stuff Liverpool on MOTD. Lovely.
Now on to the second half... |

What sort of imagery on a CD cover you saw in a shop would make you think 'I must BUY this album even tho i don't even know what's on it/who it's by yet'? |

yet another meme, this time via umlauts
Ten Things I Love Beginning With U:
Up - the direction, generally
Um Bongo - more for the name than the taste
Underworld - So many great tracks/moments. Hearing 'Rez' in Sister Ray in '93 and clicking with it after initial indifference. Listening to 'Dark Train' on my broken Walkman (so everything sounded much slower) whilst pasing through Essex countryside in '96. One of the biggest thrills of my life was going mad to 'Rowla' at Glastonbury '99 - I think I saw myself on the BBC coverage as well. The 'Everything Everything' DVD. Other favourites are 'Pearl's Girl', 'Dark And Long', 'Dirty', 'Cups', 'King Of Snake' and the original 'Born Slippy'.
Uxbridge Station - a nice Art Deco 'hangar' of a station and perhaps the biggest or at least most grandiose 'end of the line' station on the tube network. Unfortunately it may lull you into false sense of Uxbridge as some sort of exciting extension of the metropolis and this really isn't the case.
Ultramixing - my obsession/life's work, my favourite way to hear music and a massive red tick under TMFD, DYS, FYI AND OMGWTFLOL columns.
U Can't Stop Me by Basement Jaxx - channels Prince and Timbaland brilliantly - if only they could've gotten Missy on this.
United States Of America - the romantic, idealistic portrayals of (in various media inc. the ones that occur in my own mind based on my exposure to it through TV, books etc. as a kid)
Underground Resistance - for 'Amazon' alone. You need that tune in your life. I should YSI it later.
Ulrike Bjorsne of The Shortwave Set - a nice voice, looks a bit like Trish Keenan. I've been listening to the lovely 'Is It Any Wonder?' and 'Roadside' a lot lately.
Utility belts - Batman's a scientist!
